From the opening proclamation ‘Lord, our Lord’ sung over shimmering accompaniment foreshadowing tragedy and victory, to the final tender chorale ‘At my final end, Take my soul’ JS Bach’s Johannespassion is a journey of high drama.

In collaboration with the Australian Bach Society, MCC’s new Music Director, Alan Cook, conducts the Melbourne Chamber Choir, orchestra and soloists, including international Bach specialist Robert Macfarlane, in a performance that will be one of the highlights of the Easter concert season.

Each piece a distinctive, polished gem, together offering wonder and enchantment. Sacred music including Jesu Joy – Bach, Ave verum – Mozart and the stunning Miserere by Allegri. Iconic works by Baroque Hasse and Porpora – music for admiration and beautiful portrayal of text for contemplation.

The reflective Mountain Nights of Kodaly open the way to secular gems including fiery gipsy songs by Kodaly, Schumann and Dvorak; and opera and musical theatre classics to carry in remembrance and heart’s delight.

One of very few choral works by Rachmaninov, the All Night Vigil (or Vespers) stands at the pinnacle of the sacred music of the Russian Orthodox tradition.

Rachmaninov’s transformation of traditional Orthodox chants through Romantic period harmony is unmatched in its beauty and technique. MCC’s music director, Alan Cook, is a specialist in Russian repertoire and language and will direct this unique performance in Melbourne’s most beautiful Russian Orthodox church, typical of the setting for which the work was composed.

You are invited to listen to the Melbourne Women’s Choir’s repertoire for its imminent European tour. Sacred music of F Haydn, Schubert, Brahms and Rheinberger will colour your imagination of Austria and Germany; and that of Ristori and Vivaldi, the music of Venice.

Czech, Polish and Romanian music will be included in this spectacular tour preview for you!

Let the festive season begin with shouts of praise! John Rutter’s Gloria is an uplifting celebration of sound for organ, brass, percussion and choir. Accompanied by other works of English greats such as Vaughan Williams and Elgar, as well as brass fanfares, this concert is a fitting start to the holiday season.

Music Director Alan Cook directs the MCC with organ and orchestral ensemble in a beautiful programme of the best of the British tradition.

Carols in the Chapel 2019 centrepiece will be the iconic A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. The processional, solos, duos and choral movements, accompanied by harp, will lend Christmas musical enchantment.

The stunning arrangements by Dan Forrest of Hark, the Herald Angels Sing and of See Amid the Winter Snow will open the carol programme, following by contrasting carols to delight, completed with three contrasting Christmas works from Russia.
