Choral@Montsalvat Press Release 2010
Event date: 2 May 2010
Time: from 12 noon - 5 pm
Creativity and musical craft at Montsalvat
In three acoustically excellent art galleries at Melbourne’s famous artist colony Montsalvat, patrons can hear five choral concerts in five hours on Sunday 2 May.
Each hour from 12 noon to 5 pm concerts will be performed simultaneously in three galleries. Guests are able to wander the beautiful grounds, and leisurely attend concerts of their choice, while enjoying the casual atmosphere with family and friends.
‘Beautiful choral singing will be performed in spaces to inspire the singer and give pleasure to the listener’ says Faye Dumont, Artistic Director of Choral@Montsalvat.
‘A special feature of this seventh Choral@Montsalvat will be the premiere of five works written for choirs especially for this event. The composers May Andrewartha, Saska Ayris, Timothy Lawrence, Robyn Murphy and Martine Wengrow will also hear their works for the first time. Dr Elliot Gyger of Melbourne University will bring together the processes of composition with the performance of the new works.’
Thirteen choirs, eight of them community based and five of them youth ensembles, will sing works a cappella and accompanied and across sacred and secular, classical, culture-specific, gospel, folk and modern music. There is music for all tastes, and the delight of hearing singers of all life stages.
The host choir, the Melbourne Chamber Choir, will sing a dextrous and humorous programme whose centre-piece will be Martin Wesley-Smith’s Who Killed Cock Robin?, and the choir will also sing the premiere of Pied Chorale by May Andrewartha; and the co-host, the Melbourne Women’s Choir will sing gipsy and folk music of many countries. The beautiful, Romantic Gipsy Songs of Antonin Dvorak will be a feature.
Choral@Montsalvat 2010 has received welcome support from the Australia Council.
Gates of Montsalvat open at 9 am for those wishing to enjoy Montsalvat café or wanting to picnic in the grounds before the concerts begin.
